One of the events I like to go to every year is the awards concert for the NEA's National Heritage Fellowships. The fellowship awards are for a lifetime of the artistic endeavor, preserving and continuing the art into the future. The 2018 awards were last Friday. The fellows come from a wide range of artistic endeavors, albeit a bit heavy on musicians. This year there was a quilter, a clothing designer, a basket weaver, and a dia de los muertos altar maker.

The fellows tend to be big names within their genres but not really big names in the public. B.B. King is, I think, the biggest name that's won.

Every year it strikes me that no glassmakers have won the award. And since a number of the pioneers of American glassblowing are still with us, those individuals are ideally suited for the fellowship. But someone has to put in the legwork to apply. And it is quite competitive.
