View Full Version : Using Avatars

Based on popular request, we have enabled avatars, which are little images that appear below your name to the left.
New Members just joining can not select an avatar just yet.
Junior Members (10 posts or more) can select an avatar from the default list of images we have provided. You go into your profile page and can browse your choices and select one from there. You can also change your avatar any time you want by just going back into your profile page and selecting another one. If you feel you have an acceptable avatar that others would enjoy, you can post it as an attachment for me to review and if it makes sense, it can be added to the default library of avatars.
Those who reach "Member" status can actually select a custom avatar of their own choosing and upload it from your hard disk. The avatar must be no bigger than 60x60 pixels and no larger than 15k. You, too, can also choose to change up your custom avatar at any time. I have seen some really creative stuff when people make their own avatars! Some choose a photo of themselves, others create interesting images.
Of course, choosing an avatar at all is completely optional and you can choose to leave yours avatar-less, if you so choose.
Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for turning them on. I think it gives posts a "personality". I did notice thay you have not chosen one for yourself yet....:feathers:

OK, I can't figure it out. I can get to my profile page but I can't seem to find the avatars, or make any other changes for that matter. What do I need to do?

Go into your profile page.
Select "Edit Options". Slide all the way to bottom and there is the place to "Change Avatar".

Well, unless I'm getting into the wrong profile page (I'm hitting the profile icon at the bottom of any of my givin posts) I can't find anything that says Edit Options when I'm in my profile.
What am I doing wrong? :thumb:

I think that's just for viewing the profile of the poster. Use the "user cp" (for user control panel) button at the top of the page across from the logo...
you are going to need some Tinkerbell dust, I see...

Got it now. This is soooo cool!!! So many good options, it was really tough to choose. Ultimately, though Calvin, Dogbert and Opus were very close choices, but Bill the Cat [aAack] is the master of onomatopoeia, and thus the winning choice.
Thanks!
:thumb:
(Does this mean at 50 posts I can get a custom avatar that combines my :thumb: with the flames from the  avatar?)

I think the cartoon images are fun, but I'd rather be able to use a thumbnail of my work. Is that possible? I feel that in this virtual world it would be nice to identify ourselves by what we make. Sometimes I check out members websites and/or personal info to get an idea of who they are. I don't have time to do it often so that's part of the reason I'm asking. The other reason is that I still don't have a website...seems like I may never have one as there's always something more pressing to do.

With avatars
I was rather fortunate with my web site as the builders used me 2 help launch there business
so I did it on a glass 4 web swop
So I do sympathise with YR web less situation
Reading the 2 sticky threads in help
Use custom avatar
Note: the maximum size of your custom image is 60 by 60 pixels or 15000 bytes (whichever is smaller).
I am trying 2 get the hang of PSP
So I did this
It is 60 x 60 1.92 kb image only
My new animation is 14.2 Kb

Hi Katiemoe -
Can you install this as my new avatar? Is there a way to do future ones myself?

FThumb,
If its saved on your hard disk, you should be able to select it as a custom avatar and upload it yourself...unless its not the right dimensions...because its animated, it would need special attention to re-size it. Didn't we have some here who could resize an animated gif? I don't have the tools. We might need the assistance of whom was playing with your avatar originally...

You can get an excellent free program to edit, and resize, GIFs here (http://www.ryansimmons.com/users/irfanview/english.htm). (I used it to shrink my avatar.)

Hey Katiemoe,
As time goes on my post #'s go down. I understand Pete is cleaning out the clutter and saving the pertinent info. I wonder if I will ever make it to member status. My question is: I would like to have a custom avatar. I'm sure I have enough posts and I would like to have something that represents me. I understand the 60 x 60 and less then 15k. So what ya say? Can I start the new year with a new avatar? Thanks

Pete...Maybe we could get the announcer that introduced
the "Flash Gordon" show. (I doubt that your old enough to remember, I'm being kind...I know that HENRY would remember however!) Your introduction as Super Moderator could have an audio tag, a crash of a lightening's roar reverberating through the mountains...then..."ZEUS THE COW...on high protector of the rights of man." (Booming in a god like voice...then more thunder...each time anyone signed on the board)
Happy New Year everyone!
(I just had the thought that Henry, Eben and Thumb would also demand equal treatment...I can hear it now.)

What file format do you save your custom avatar
in before uploading it?
I tried gif and jpeg and it doesn't seem to work.
I'm using photoshop 6 and I can get the size
right but I'm clueless as to the format.
They seem to be gifs, and I know they have to be pretty small - 60x60 pixels or so. I have to admit Colin did mine for me cause I don't have the software to make them small.

Patti and Kurt, the easiest way to shrink, or otherwise edit images of all kinds, is with IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/), a free download.

I'm new to all this so please bear with me...I went to the rows and rows of avatars available and I'm wondering - where is Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Catwoman (meow), Tankgirl - Wilma Flintstone and Lucy are my womanly options??? Of course many of the images are non-gendered and delightfully universal which is fine - but you know, sometimes you want to make a statement - where are the female anti-heroes, the seductresses, the non-mommies, the witches (Endora anyone?), the bitches, the goddesses? There seemed to be plenty of masculine choices for a variety of moods and personalities - do these other avatar options just not exist? Just curious - the whole concept is new to me. Besides, if I get up to 10 posts, I get to choose one...
