I really liked the story about the chinese guys in Toronto who tapped Toronto Power's main line under the city street after they dug a fifty foot tunnel out to the road to tap it. That was the real beginning of my being on the outs with GAS, that Penny Berk would not allow me to run an article about that in the general heading of " Another way to Economize on your fuel bills". She said it would offend the Chinese in Seattle and might defame Toronto Power.... Right... But I don't think it's in the book. Kurt Sills was our intrepid reporter on the spot with that one.
Can you imagine live tapping of a 10,000 volt line just so you could make bongs? Jeez.

I had a studio in Toronto for several years. I could easily retire on the money I have sent to Toronto Power over the years.

Congrats, Ed!
I'm hoping it arrives soon so that I can take it to the hospital with me. A few days before Xmas, they found a lovely large tumor on one of my ovaries and I have to have everything removed. I'll be in the hospital for 3-7 days, then laid up for 4-6 weeks. Some reading material that mixes well with morphine will be great!
Let me know if my tales did not make it in so that I can order a copy straight away.
Again, Congrats. Your other two books are already in the bag packed for the hospital.

Laura, best wishes for a successful surgery and a quick recovery. Hell of a way to kick off the new year, eh? Be careful not to break any stitches laughing while reading Ed's latest.
Get well very soon! :)

Heal fast so you can blow more glass!

No kidding. I was back in the office for a week when the gut pain hit. Turned out to be a tumor. I had to work hard to get off the crutches so that I could have the next surgery. 2006? Good Riddance!
Happy 2007 to everyone and thanks for the warm wishes. They do have wi-fi in the hospital, so you may get a lovely morphine inspired post next week!

Ed, Thanx for the copy. Good job. I really think you're just scratching the surface though. It's a wacky world out there. Later, TC

The book arrived today, and it's a riot! What a huge project that must have been. Thanks a million, Ed! :D (Love the "no barcode" position, but won't that make it tough to market it through retailers, Amazon, etc.?)

Thanks TC, and yes...we are only just scratching the surface of this global
glass phenomena. It is a wacky world out there and some stories should not simply fade away. Thanks everyone for your contributions and it is my pleasure to get you all in print. Keep them coming.
And yes Rich, the barcode "joke" on the back of the book is aimed directly
at booksellers like Amazon (who are by the way a pain-in-the-ass to deal with on the other side of the equation...Barnes and Noble and Border's Books are not much better), some of whom will not purchase your book if it doesn't have a barcode on them. My audiance is pretty small in the global book market, so I prefer to deal direct with our community than the corporate machines that make more profit off my book than I do.
besides, I didn't write these books to make money; (the sticker price reflects that), it is to get the information out there and into the hands of the people that need it the most.
and Scott, glad this helped mke you real boy now...it makes me only wonder...what's it going to take to make you a real man?...

Ed, between this and Henry's new edition, 2006 has to have ended with more new glass reading than I can remember. Almost missed dinner last night over it. Glad to read other versions of things I can hardly admit I've done, like the full annealer start ups, or the non-start ups that you discover when you go to put the first piece away.
A "Hazards of the craft" chapter with more stories like the horizontal swing process might save some lives. Someone who was there for the snow slinging and neck wrapping event should write it up.
"Batch mixing mistakes" could get some interesting chemistry as well, at least from me.
Good stuff! Happy New Year with glass everyone!

GBR [1.0] is nothing but more evidence of the quality of the posters here.
Ed Schmid's earlier books have been classics. This is just another of the same quality.
Pretty good teacher, too.

Peter brought mine to the hospital and it is a true joy! Especially when enhanced by a demerol drip and some percocet.
I was released yesterday afternoon and I do not have ovarian cancer, as we originally suspected. It was a chronic ectopic pregnancy that had hemmoraged into itself several times. It's gone now, I'm feeling as well as can be expected with a huge incision from belly button on down.
But I'm so stinkin' glad that is wasn't cancer (ovarian cancer only has a 30% survival rate) that 4 weeks of recovery is fine and dandy with me. I'll be back in the glass studio in no time.
Ed, the book is great. I'm rationing myself 10 pages per day so that I can enjoy it during my entire recovery. Thanks for sending it and thanks to everyone for their warm wishes.

Laura,
I think you should take a booth at GAS in Pittsburgh and show everyone your scar. I'm sure I speak for all when I say how fortunate and how we're all breathing a sigh of relief that you've dodged that bullet. Get well soon.

Ed,
I'm still laughing my ass off. This is great. I've spent more time in the John since it arrived than I have in the shop. I've really needed this. Thank you for the copy. I love it.
Jay.

Hey Jay,
you're welcome! Glad the book is "what you need".
Gee, I'd hate to be the one reponsible for keeping you from work,

Ed I am so proud the own your books and this one is no exception. Thanks for the copy it arrived today.
I will show it off and see if the glass industry will ever be the same again.
Opps I forgot no glass industry as yet. But the book will help.
Glass can get so frustrating at times, we need the laughter.

I got my complimentary copy a week or so ago. Thanks, Ed!
The book is great. There are millions of great stories out there and you present them with humour and style. It was interesting to see you stray from the entirely hand-made look a bit, and it works well. Some of the stories in there are horrific and many of them are funny but I like your comments and contributions the most. The "So, You Wanna Build A HOT SHOP?" pages had me laughing out loud and so did the Ten Year 2.2 Million Dollar Governmental Study page, it’s too funny! (I can't believe no-mouse pushed the Muzak button!)
Congratulations on a great book, and thanks for making it.
