Getting the Shaft

I found this in the new Grizzly catalog:

Any reason I couldn't add a motor and a wheel for a low-cost, light-use lathe? The shaft looks really short, but I guess that might help it stay straight. The housing looks small enough to not get in the way. Thoughts?
