View Full Version : blood red

I switched to spectrum pillows and gaffer color just so I could make a red bowl without compatibility problems.
I want a blood red, not the bright red of oxygenated blood but the darker venous blood. You see some roses this color.
I started with overlaying G178 (white) with G178 (crimson) then overlaying on G72 (scarlet) I then overlayed that on a clear cone on the pipe.
I got a red that was too bright.
How do I get a darker red? I got a nice color on my off cuts which means I might be getting close.
Should I use more G72? Should I go to Cherry, G74?
I need to do this soon.
Cheers,
Lawrence

Try melting red spectrum cullet in a small pot in a hobby kiln, after a couple days and with a little reduction in the glory you might be there.

Lawrence,
I haven't been able to get a good deep red with Gaffer colors yet either. However, I've been able to get it with this Reichenbach combination, which shows no stress under a polariscope when encased with Gaffer clear:
R143 transparent Garnet over R147 opaque Fire Red
I'd also try putting the R143 over R149 opaque Rose Red. I haven't tested that for compatibility, but R149 is closer to the color I'm looking for. I just don't have any on hand.
If you have to stay with Gaffer colors, try overlaying G179 Diablo Red as your base color. It's more of a brick color and it seems to be more opaque than G176 Vermillion and G178 Crimson.
G74 Cherry Red is a pretty red, maybe too bright, and I don't think it's dense enough for what you're trying to achieve if you're blowing it out. It'll also go brown on you if you're not careful.

Thanks Steve but I only have my SiC furnace.....
I used scarlet(G72) over G178 and the 178 was not dense enough, that's why I backed it up with white.
You figure that if I use a wack of diablo and a bunch of G72, that might do? Or should I back that up with white?
If I use that Reichenback red is there any hope it will fit with spectrum pillows.
I really don't care if I have to spend a bit of money, I just want that red and have no problems with it fit checking a few years down the road.
I have been trying to get this done for a few years now. I tried red gaffer with Chinese cullet and they all fit checked...They lied.
So I switched to spectrum...

Lawrence,
Your milage may vary. I work solid exclusively, so everything has to be kept thin when it's applied. I don't have the ability to blow things out to make them thin enough so that they won't cause annealing problems. So, the colors I mentioned should be compatible with your process, because they definitely work in solids - but obviously I can't guarantee it.
I don't have the G72 Scarlet, but looking at the pictures on Gafferusa.com, it looks like it might be slightly more dense than G74 Cherry. However, the comment on both of them says that if they're used thin they will appear orange - which Cherry certainly does!
Good luck!

Try the Scarlet over Diablo without the white. Scarlet goes orange-red by itself with backlighting, but as an overly helps to darken the Diablo and make it more rich and deep.
The other thing you could do is mix in a small amount of G50 with Diablo on a torch to darken it. More work, but it gets you the color you want.

Plenty of ruby extra over diablo should get you there, if that is too red than you could try aubergine over chilli.

You might also experiment with striking the reds you have more than once....as in let 'em cool way down then reheat. You may just get brown or you may get something more hemotine.

I use z-651 for a deep black red.

Gary,
Do you use that with either Gaffer or Spectrum clear? I've had terrible compatibility problems with every Z color I've tried with Gaffer clear. Just curious...

I am using it with SP batch. I have never had a problem with it.

That's a very pretty red. That's what I am looking for. My color is always cased in clear because of the way I build up and re-mix my colors, so I have to use overlays.
I am going to try the suggested combinations as soon as glassblower girlfriend feels better.
you guys are wondreful.
