curious to what is common or good practice among people here when someone buys one of your more expensive pieces; Should you send a written thank you a few days/weeks later? What if you have never met the person and just shipped it somewhere?

I would.
It's $0.41 versus a $xxx sale.
It's worth 41cents. Or even 26 cents for a postcard.
If that's going to break the bank, you have other probs.
Proven buying clients are worth a Pile of $$$$. They will tell others, and you will get even more sales.
I don't know whether it's etiquette, but it's good business.

...and if you use one of your special "the artist" postcards, it comes across much better than a "Hallmark" thank you card.

Museum glue if appropriate
