Soon I'm going to build a little venturi burner gas melter for reduction colors. My questions:

How much distance between the wall and the pot...or is it not critical? EC pot.

How many BTUs per pound of glass or cubic foot would you suggest?

I remember about having the burner flame above and not touching the pot and having enough space for the flame to develop. Any other suggestions in this area?

any other thoughts or suggestions in general?

Keep the thing from impinging on the pot or it will break it. Also, have a big enough combustion chamber to allow for full combustion or it will choke. Keep your stack tall and oversized. Control the stack from the top with bricks. Use a big enough venturi and keep your gas pressure high enough to take advantage of the system. Prepare to spend money. You might consider rereading the things Hugh Jenkins has had to say about compressed air venturis.

Dave,
How much pressure are you going to have?

Thanks Pete, I'm off to read Hugh's stuff.

Terry,

15 pounds of propane. My gas company won't let me have any more, even though I have a 20 pound regulator on the shelf. They're worried about the gas liquifying in the plumbing over 15 pounds if it sits unused, so I'll stick to the 15 pounds in case of liability issues.
