What is the absolute min. clearance between an ec pot and the wall with molly elements hung above and does it help/hurt to fill the space in the cast catch basin below the bottom of the pot with frax to reduce the interior volume? the reasoning behind it being that if a pot does break it will eat through the frax and go towards the drain port anyways?

A: I have actually accidentally had an element touching a crucible for months with no bad effect. After that dumb luck comment- two inches.

As to your notion of what will happen if the pot cracks-- wrong. The fiber and the glass combine and make an interesting and close to indestructible glasscrete. No flow at all.

Justr line the lowers in the furnace with a good plastic refractory. Blue Coral will work,Mono T-9 used to be the industry standard but it has apparantly been discontinued. .
