Someone has brought me an aluminum downrigger ball mold and wants me to cast a glass downrigger ball. My question is will the mold hold up to 2000 degree glass. Will it melt, flame up, ???. I know aluminum melts at 1200, will the glass heat up the mold so much that it melts? or will the heat be dissipated. The glass will need to be in the mold for a little while, not like an optic mold where your only in it for a second. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Good chance of busting the mold.

Nah, I don't think it would break Steve but..........lots of other interesting, not necessarily good, things could happen..........

I'd be making a hollow wax positive right out of that mold. Jeweller's wax and victory brown 1/2 and 1/2 is a hard, easily chased blend, but not too fragile. A 1/8" thick positive is more than enough.

Coat positive with thin layers of Mold Mix 6 or similar fibrous, fireable ceramic shell, until it's 1/8" thick( after it's dried), melt wax out, torch fire mold, reinforce mold, fill mold, anneal and peel. Simple.

Do it as many times as you like.

Good luck.
