8" i.d. x 12"-14" deep with no door just 6" hole in retention ring, basically a g.h. for goblets

i have a ransom v-1 venturi which I bought from Ward burner (his B-2) years ago. I would like to use natural gas instead of propane so I was trying to figure out if I could get enough btu's out of it.

We just built a new glory hole, 10" I.D., Brick backed up with frax. We are using a small Wilton Burner head, 3.5" Diameter for 1.5" Pipe thread.

I have a couple of venturis around from use on a past setup with propane, but even drilling out the orifice larger, we could barely get the edges of the bricks to red heat in about an hour. The culprit, only 6 Water column inch gas pressure. Enough to work with a venturi, but not practical.

The fix was to use a gas air mixer, and forced air from my blower. Now it heats up in about 40 minutes. It makes a little more noise than the venturi, but we can live with it.

If you have say 8 to 9 Water Column Inches of gas pressure, your venturi will probably work ok, but if not you may have to add a blower.

Eclipse makes a handy CD with a great deal of useful information regarding combustion, including gas orifice sizes, but I don't know how to get it. If you can find someone that has it, you may want to take a look at the flow and BTU information.

Hope this helps

I have 2 psi to work with. I hooked it up today and tried it out. After drilling the orifice to a #51 it kicked out a nice flame and lots of heat. Whether it is enough I will know in a few weeks after it is assembled but think I have some room to enlarge the orifice a bit more.
