Any one seen this type of burner? Doesn't look like the safest thing I have ever seen.

Here is the video of it in action

as it is meant to be manually operated by using the propane tank valve

Oh

My

God

Are people really this stupid, or is this just a shining example of evolution in action?

That company is setting itself up for real trouble by saying the product can be used in glass furnaces -- something most would consider a heavy-duty, continuous-use application. And putting a disclaimer on a Website does nothing to protect against the lawsuit that will come when someone uses that black iron and pipe dope setup to melt anything more than ice.

Yeah, right next to his dried fruit and honey on ebay http://stores.ebay.com/Frostic-Incorporated

Scary...

Now we know how they dry the fruit and chase the bees away from the hives.

I don't see the problem? I wouldn't rely on any venturi burner for unobserved use but for a glory hole or garage it looks like a good option to me. You could use the same basco safety system Dudley sells for his venturi set ups. I realize this burner would be loud but besides that how is it dangerous? I bet a Gib tip would work on this burner just fine. I'm guessing the skepticism is the fact it's black iron and not cast? btw They explain in the directions you need a high pressure gas regulator so it's not really using the valve on the tank for adjustment. Doesn't this remind anyone of the simple reil burners we built?

I really like the link. The Single Orifice BTU Calculator they have looks handy but I'm sure that info is out there for free if you look. The frost-stick dry ice machine is also very cool. Over all they seem to follow the kiss rule very well.

Does anyone know how there price on raw bees wax compares?

It's a Reil burner, or very close to one of those designs.

I've used them for years, they're fine. The locals have used similar for fish cookers and peanut boilers for eons. Almost as many BTU possible as a venturi for the price of some pipe and a bit of time.

I wouldn't walk away and leave one running. That does exclude furnace useage as is. As Sky said, with the right safety stuff it would be OK. They will burn better with a Gib head or homemde ribbon burner. I use those adapter fittings that take the pipe size up one size as a burner head and it burns quite nicely. Apparently that makes for just about the right situation to hold the flame just off the head. I even upgraded to stainless for durability...years instead of months.

This guy was a bit lazy, those holes in the side should be finished into a slot in the original design. They get a good bit of turn down if you run a needle valve just ahead of the burner, and (obviously)not to forget a valve for emergency shutoff.

Google "reil burner mongo" and it should take you to all the plans and instructions. Super easy to build.

The burner is fine, the seller is nuts.
