I would ask gaffer for a list of it's customers.

For example there is a company in Canada called colour fusion that might have some.

sylvie@colourfusion.com

note Canadian spelling of color..

Did they happen to say why they're changing the name?

Are they changing the formula, too, or just the name? I hope not.

I heard that they were moving the color towards red and away from orange. They told me that vermilion was too close to another color (i forget which one) so they were going to make it redder (i know thats not a word). anyway, Ive been back ordered for over a month.

Hmmm. Thats strange because they did just release another opaque red in between vermillion and crimson.

I seriously hope they are not changing this color, it's been perfect from day #1

Ornella made one sweet red a while back, but the vermillion is the best red i have come across in years. I just blasted a full bar of the stuff to make my own frit. desperation..

from the newsletter:

CARMINE: New Opal Red
Since October 2007, Gaffer has sold over 1,000 kgs of the Vermilion G-176 and the Crimson G-178. To us, this indicates that we are doing something right with our opal reds. However, we are also aware that for some, the color difference between Crimson and Vermilion is not sufficient to meet everyone’s needs. To address this issue, we have made a new color that we hope will keep you all satisfied. From this point on, Carmine G-170 is the color between the spectrum width of Vermilion, which is now significantly more orange, and the original Crimson which remains unchanged. Reds are tough to make. We are dependent on variable raw material sources and at the mercy of barometric changes in the weather. Nevertheless, we still believe we offer the most consistent red glass products for glass blowers on the world market. These extremely vibrant reds are not nearly as opaque as others, (such as our Ferrari Red), and more of the color must be used to achieve a greater opacity.

Well, after a dicussion with Lacy at Gaffer, it looks like the new Carmine uses the same formula as the old Vermillion which has now been shifted toward the orange end of the spectrum. Bottom line, if you need the old Vermillion then order the new Carmine :)

well, why not just make a new name for the orange and keep it simple?...ugghh....I'll start changing the labels on the containers I guess.
