I was scratching around the internet and thought this was a good price:

$27.00 per lb is actually a very good price these days BUT it doesn't say much about the grade of the stuff. There are some very cheap ceriums that are cut with other stuff. Any of the ceriums used in automated polishing are generally very low grade. I would view 65-70% as low grade and a particle size at 2.5 micron is pretty coarse.

Just sayin'

from His newsletter

...we have been working with several companies to produce a high quality, optic cerium at a great price point and we've finally succeeded. Our first batch of His Glassworks' own cerium, Cer-Optik is current on a freight ship from China and scheduled to arrive by mid to late June. Our Cer-Optik is a 99.9% pure cerium oxide in a white color and will be available in the next few weeks at $39.00 per pound and $1,500.00 per 44lb. pail.

That is actually a fairly reasonable price at this point, which isn't saying much. I am no longer ceriuming my bases, just surfaces that really need luster. I also think the price of cerium to be really volatile, given that the Chinese put a $100 per KG export tax on it, they can just as easily take it off under pressure. It's not that rare a material but it is a political football. I would caution against buying more than you absolutely need.
