Ive tried a lot of different boro clears and color and Im still not using ANY chinese produced glass. I used chinese produced white for a bit but certainly there is way too much variability for me. I have 4 pounds of it still sitting on my shelf gathering dust. For clear I find Simax to be the best quality and consistency and for me thats critical.

Mostly I get the chinese stuff for students to practice on. A lot of the colors are still very stiff, but seed, texture, and boil have all improved. The new "hindu kush" stuff is pretty terrible though, boils like crazy. Like first gen crayon bad.

The chinese advances have been through specific industries and factories. I think those advances have come in Lead optical glasses and higher quality soft glasses but certainly not in Boro. A certain amount of the advance is due to the Chinese advances in Alumina zirconium silicate refractories. That is quite good at this point. Further, there are Chinese silicas which are remarkably clean.

Bomex is one of the largest producers of boro in China. The Chinese white is from when Paul Trautman “North Star glass” took the tag line and had it made in China. I apologize if that info is sensitive but so many years later I do believe it’s common knowledge.

Yes but its not about the formula. Pauls whites are great. For whatever reason the China white is inconsistent to the point of being unusable batch to batch. If you like it Ill sell you my 4 pounds cheap cheap.
