Veggie Oil
Is there a thread here that already talks about people's experiences using veggie oil instead of propane?

Greg Vriethoff 10-27-2020 05:52 PM

Here's one. Easy to find using the search function. Try that first in the future.

Hugh is the one you should listen to on the subject. There is another entity (that shall remain nameless) in this thread that you should avoid at all costs.

You may want to reach out to Julie Conway at BioGlass. She's very friendly and helpful.

Go luck to you. If you're looking for a cheap alternative you may be disappointed going this route. Listen to the voices here that have experience.

thanks. And thanks for the info about using the search.

David: Pay close attention to Hugh and ignore Dennis Hetland if possible. Hugh spent more than a decade working out the oil issue since $5.25 per gal propane motivated him.

I visited his shop on the Big Island years back and was just amazed at what he was doing with discarded french fry oil. Those possibilities don't exist now and Hugh was buying new oil at Costco. Even so, it was economically feasible.. He does consult on how to do it and was making some of the components. I think he has retired from blowing glass at this point since he indicated to me that he was getting his last set of crucibles last year. Write him a private message, or if you need it, I can contact him for you. I suspect a google of Hugh Jenkins Hawaii will get you there.

I looked and his website is no longer up. His last known email is so you can try that. He's well worth contacting.

Hey, Pete, thank you for that email. I will contact him tonight. I did notice that his website was down, so I figured I was out of luck.
Your furnace is still going strong, by the way.

I built a second one just like it after the color class and use it today. Small and efficient, also cheap for what it does. I'm glad that one still gives you pleasure. A gas three pot furnace for 4K, not bad.

If the contact for Hugh doesn't work, let me know and I'll look in our biz files. Do tell him I referred you.
