the elements, even when old continue to operate at 2800F if run at the proper voltage. Quartz survives that temperature. The only thing that goes after them is fluorine. If there is fluorine in the cullet, or batch it will have an effect. Most of these glasses might have .5 percent calcium fluoride in them as it lowers melt temps. I have been asked in the past by one person about it and I told him to get the fluorine out of the glass and his issues stopped.
