The problem with most metals is they will 'work harden' as they are formed. Taking wire and coiling it up probably does this to the wire (Kanthal?), making it much harder to rework - I don't know Kanthal so I can't say for sure, but quite possible, especially with what you say about trying to uncoil it.

If you do work harden metal, you need to heat and cool it according to a strict schedule to relieve the stress and return the material to a workable state. However, that schedule (and the various temperatures) is different for each metal.

I have no idea what you might have to do to Kanthal to make it maleable again, but as you say - sometimes better to chuck it and do another.
