That's kind of a numbers game. 500k is indeed quite a lot, but if that ends up being total morbidity that's .15% of the population, which isn't quite as sexy. People as a whole are have a tactile sense of the impact on their lives from government restrictions, much less so about what the actual virus is doing. It's the availability heuristic gone haywire.
