Franklin,

In a surface mix torch, like a Carlisle or Nortel, the fuel exits from the little round tubes and the oxygen comes from around them; the area between the tubes

That is quite interesting. It makes sense now. I opened the o2 and could not find the tubes but yet it was flowing out. Never thought it would be between. Glass ahhhh.

Electrical only.
Remember we dont need heat. Ask me about the fridge that works of solar heating. Gas and glass go together. They are strange entities. Difficult for me to visualize gas flowing around a tube. What hold the inside end etc. but wires....yes I ok with that.

Franklin, imagine a metal tube with enough brass tubes inside of it to fill the space exept for very small spaces between each brass tube.
At the bottom of the metal tube, the brass tubes have been brazed together so that there isn't any space between the tubes but, the brass tubes are still open from end to end. At the bottom of the brass tubes there is the fuel valve that allows the fuel to travel up inside of the brass tubes only and exits out the other end. Just up from the fuel valve there is another valve that allows oxygen to flow into the metal tube surrounding the brass tubes. The oxygen is contained in the metal tube surrounding the brass tubes until it reaches the end where the fuel exits also which makes it a surface mix type torch. Each gas is isolated from eachother in their tubes until they reach the end where they mix and combust. I thought Tom Furman showed you his torch that he made, it works the same as I just explained.
I built one for $35.00 and it works quite well .

Thanks Mike. No, looks like Tom still has some surprises. The question was triggered by something Paul said about how he use the oxygen to shape his flame but he had a multi section torch. Little bit more complicated .

I think Paul S has a Carlisle CC which is a nice torch with a wide range of adjustability to change the flame.
The pictures of Tom's homemade torch is in his Glassblowing topics picture folder.

That torch was an amalgamation between Dave Bross and myself, I give him most of the credit for it and I think he got most of the ideas from someone else , but it works quite well and the majority of the parts all came from Lowe's home store.

Can you share with the group how it was built? Do you have pictures?
