Lots of "money shots". No swearing. Lots of glass on the floor....this is harder than it looks.... Critique bullshit brings me back to memories of grad school.
I have to watch it because I know that people will come in to my gallery and ask about it.... it will give glassblowing a publicity boost. |

Like wicked tuna did for Wanchese. I was first mate on one of the first three green stick tuna commercial fishing boats in nc in the late 80s/early. 90s. I can not watch that show. did our charter industry good though.

Love the show, except the 30 minute format. Give me INK MASTER 60 minute shows with some in depth, and it will be great.
It will be great to tell customers about and will bring in $$$. |

And why didn't they think of doing this with the Dutch Masters?

It was well done. Everyone was nice and the producers didn't create a bunch of drama like is typical on reality shows. It was easy to call each episode but it didn't make it any less fun. All our reality TV should be made by Canadians. We do such a bad job most of the time.

I thought it was very interesting but would like to see what they could do with more time. It’s was also the age old question of Art or Technique. I personally like to see the technique.

It reminded me too much of art school...if you could bullshit, you had a chance. You can't judge what art is. You can only judge on what the "judges" think that art is. When they put in people like Dante, Martin, Karen, then we might have a competition on who is judged the best on that day or week. ...and how could you build the "largest studio in North America" and not have proper ventilation???? The filming was done in Canada in Oct and Nov. Why do the participants have to sweat their asses off and almost pass out ??? Just for "good TV"??? ....and why doesn't each bench have their own torch?

On Wicked Tuna, they like to show gaffing the fish. In car races, they like crashes, in golf it gets weird. they show balls in the water, balls in the sticks and hail Mary putts. NASCAR is obvious. "That's my car he's driving!" So, with Sweat?, good TV. Remember how Dale used to use all the muscle Tee shirts with Billy. These guys still like that buff look.
Don't look too deep and hard here. It ain't the MOMA. Goblets never were.

Right? You buy 10 holes, but only one set of cork? On a sculpture show? Janusz did an interview saying the camera people were fainting and barfing "until they got the ventilation sorted out". From what looked to be a partially cmog produced show, I expected a little better.
The thing that's got me the most peeved is that they set it up as a glassblowing competition, which could have pretty solid metrics of judgement, then they pull a Dale and make it about "design" and art school personality bullsh!t. |

I still think series like this should drop the competitive aspect. Give each artist an episode in which to show their process and speak their "philosophies." Glassblowing, blacksmithing, etc. are plenty dramatic without making contests out of them. Competitions don't have much afterlife on video but informational/demonstration videos sell well and have rerun value.
Also, it bugs me when there are obvious "inserts" commenting on actions already completed. (Note the changes in clothes.) |

well, I think you can be a pretty poor technician making work and still have a very good design sense and that will make a career. It describes me pretty well. I don't think that whoever can make the most impossibly detailed wine glass really matters in the long run. Italian history is filled with dead men who made glass at least as well if not better than today.
While Harvey spouted "Technique is Cheap" and Marquis came right back with "No, technique is really expensive". Both had good points. The line that I remember the best after fifty years was from Jaimey Carpenter who I have always greatly admired. He simply said during an interview and walked off. "My glass is Half Empty. " For me, Bingo.

A lot of that is really legit, but abandoning technique doesn't really do a ton of service.
I feel like what they did was akin to pulling in a professional chef to make your cake on the Great British Baking show cause you couldn't hack it, and then forgetting that the rest of the competition was actually centered around what YOU made. |
