shipping
I have a large crate of glass stuff to ship cross-country and am curious if anyone here has a shipper they could recommend. It's going Maine to CA, residence to residence. I've got freightquote.com as a back up.
Another question- insurance for the above: Should I rely on the shipper's coverage or can I source it better elsewhere? One more- freight classifications. Near as I can tell, for my bowls and plates and such it's density based and should be somewhere in the mid- 100s. Anyone knowledgeable about that? |

Check out Uship.com heard about it here, used it a few times for equipment with good results.

Don't rely on shippers coverage. Pack it better than you think possible and then get outside insurance. Shippers coverage is usually by the lb.
I remember one time at Baltimore where the shipper left Michael Nourot's display crate standing on one end.

Thanks.
Ended up with freightquote and Estes, their own insurance. I built the crate and it's packed like a masonry house of excr... In all the years of packing for UPS, I've not had a claim denied. I come from a packing culture. |

I certainly have liked working with Estes. The only other local carrier is Old Dominion and that has been a poor experience for me.
Trying to get fair market value is a weird experience in damages. Your approach is best. Pack for nuclear war.

Here is how the US Government and the National Park Services pack art for shipping and other things.

Print that out and keep it at your bedside. Read 2 pages and you will have no problem falling asleep.
