PRC email block

It appears that the People's Republic of China (PRC) has instituted a 100% firewall for email either in or out of China, we don't know which, or whether it's both. My associate in the Shanghai shop has been forced to go to Hong Kong to use VPN to contact me for quite some time but I was able to email other associates in the country up until last month. No More.

One assumes this is tied to Trump's Trade War.

You may have to blame this one on Peppa Pig.

Just kidding. I blame all the bad stuff on Trump.

Can hardly wait for this type of thing to be the norm here.

Can't we just call Bill Gates, and have him turn the internet off?

What about online shopping? You know if that is affected?
If snail mail still works then do it the good old way.

When I was in China a few years back, some Google based email was blocked. I used a different email account without problem.

Plus all Google searches were blocked.

If you haven't yet tried a variety of email providers, that might be something to try.

Pete how do you know when an email gets blocked. Does it come back.
I'm wondering as I am waiting on a response from a crucible company there.

I had asked Eveline to forward email to my element people since I had tried for three weeks to get them with no response and they normally are back at me the next day.
Eveline is a senior VP for Ingersol Rand and IR has now had it's email blocked in Shanghai. Eveline runs accounts for 16 countries. She picked up my request in Hong Kong where she has a number of VPN's. The PRC chases them down and she has to get new ones very frequently.
So, I asked her if she could forward my email to Mr Chen from Hong Kong which she was happy to do but wrote me back two hours later saying the firewall was at 100% in the PRC in both directions. So, no elements and in your case no pots. This has been going on for some time with IR but the complete block is fairly new and has been up for at least three weeks- about the time Trump has targeted Chinese steel. I hope you're tired of winning all the time.

And do keep in mind the Chinese pots are only green ware. Been there, done that.

My worry is incomplete information going in, wrong product coming out, breakage, replacement blah blah blah and I haven't even gotten to wire transfers. It's hard even when it's easy.

A good VPN (Virtual Private Network) will enable emailing China or anyplace else. "Good" almost always means paid, but free ones are often OK if you're not downloading copywritten stuff. Prices for paid versions are crashing to the point where I suspect they will simply be built into systems in the near future.

This is why we need Elon Musk's next venture to get built asap. Starlink..... it's thousands of tiny satelites that will beam internet and cell traffic directly. Governments are having WAY TOO MUCH control of everything.

I asked a friend of mine that works for a Chinese government funded agency here in the US and he said that only certain industries have probably been targeted for blockage and they have developed all kinds of strange stuff to censor all sorts of emails and exchange of info. He expects a lot more of this to go on and doesn't see much improvement on communication and trade in the near future.
Emails from his agency are still going thru, though his agency may be closed down before too long.

My smokeshop buddy got emails this morning from his Alibaba vendor. He's buying tiny crucibles and steel parts for vaporizers.

The PRC is currently disabling VPN's more quickly now. Eveline has to get two new ones a month. Ingersol Rand hasn't been allowed to send out for almost a year. That is not a small company. Having a VPN is not a guarantee of access as it once was.

Buying in China will become seriously risky as this develops. Every aspect of the deal becomes a problem. Ordering, accuracy, , shipping, breakage, insurance, payments. It's actually not for the faint of heart.

I don't seem to be having a trouble with gmail to and from China from here in Australia.

Maybe set yourself up with WeChat, people in China can't live without it.

It's all quite selective. You Tube is not available in China nor is much social media. . Once Eveline goes back to Shanghai, it goes dark.

It's a mixed bag. China was quite repressive about communication before the trade war came up.

I thought May day was a Russian festival day. I'm continuing to work the other suppliers but Eveline is supplying options.

I have a neighbor who buys tons of crap on eBay that comes from China, and he says he hasn't run into any problems with communicating with sellers through email. Could the Chinese somehow exempt eBay from restrictions since it brings in so much Western currency?

I just had communication with China thru e-bay about an hour ago with no problem. I told them to contact me direct, we'll see how that goes.

No problems contacting the companies in china I work with. Now quality control and consistency, reliability, and timely shipping have always been hit or miss. That has not changed for the better since the trade negotiations started unfortunately.
