Teaching

Anyone re-open for classes? My wife and I just had a baby in May and the idea of teaching the masses scares me. Our parents still havenít held our baby (per every pediatrician we talk to request) and it feels irresponsible to expose myself at work. Has anyone worked out a safe path forward? We are lucky that we donít have to start right away but classes are the bulk of our income so itís inevitable that we will have to resume shortly or drastically change the model. Thanks in advance, Eli

I do fused glass, so the exposure is easier to control than in a hot shop; I re-opened for a few select responsible renters, masked, one or two at a time, no hugging, etc.
I've been approached for small group classes but have turned them down, just not worth the exposure.

Spiral arts just released a manually-operated pipe blower: https://www.instagram.com/p/CBMjRdgHRvh/

Doesn't help with a lot of other issues tied to bringing the public back into your space, but it could at least help with the problem of multiple people sharing blowpipes.

We're still "on track" for a July 6th reopen. Not that I'm pulling any strings.

We don't do Blow Your Owns in the summer. We are going to reevaluate in September. I personally will not put myself or my employees at risk to start back up again. There will have to be some major changes in the numbers and the attitude of the public before I start back up again. I'm going to lose a large part of my income, but I can't blow glass if I'm dead.... like a friend of mine asked me, "what will be done in the next month that is different from now that will make you change your mind?"

Corning in August?

I don't know about classes - or rather I suspect not classes, but Corning is reaching out to past renters. July will be "local" (New York Based?) renters, and in August to out-of-towners. As you know, Corning doesn't do anything in half measures - the protocols are strict.

- At most 1 active bench in the shop at a time
- No more then 2 at the bench
- Masks worn at all times
- No lip or hose blowing (eg something new)
- 1 hour to transition (1/2 to clean up, 1/2 to get ready)

While I'd like to support The Studio, I just can't steel myself to work with a mask and to learn a new method of moving air...

God bless the men and women at at CMOG for keeping the lights on.

What a mess - everything.

Monte

If there's no lip or hose blowing, how does that work?

Thats unfortunate and in my opinion more unsafe than the risk of infection without them.

Why are masks unsafe?

Larry - why do you say that masks aren't safe? I'm no fan, I'm just curious.

Pete - Re how to blow - a new device will be needed. Apparently, they are working on a prototype.

As a solo gaffer, I dream about a light compressed air device that attaches to the end of the pipe and is gradually activated wirelessly via a foot petal. ... Then again, since I've worked it out, I probably not use it.

As a solo gaffer, there should be no difficulty. Many of us started out that way and it's still the way I work and I have zero helpers.

Cloth masks are 95 percent effective to prevent you from spreading COVID to others. It's not meant to protect you , so, keep your distance, wash your hands etc.

Anyone who thinks this is over is drinking the kool aide . Classes are something risky I wouldn't do. The new projections for deaths from this are now upgraded to 200K by Oct 1st.

Another approach would be to simply make paperweights.

The country is simply being gas lighted by the president and vice president. If teaching is currently part of your business model, revise it.

Until there is a vaccine and generally proven controls in place we aren't doing any blowing classes only solids and we are a pretty far distance from when we will do any solid classes.

I'm glad to hear that Art. Solids are an enormous challenge and do push you to make better glass in clear. Once you start doing that and try different glasses, you start to appreciate the differences.

I liked the notion that Trump announced the scientists had done such great work on the AIDS vaccine, this should be done by Christmas.

There of course is no AIDS Vaccine.
