cutting kevlar
I tried earlier today to dismember a few fingers from othewise spent gloves. I used brand new razor blades and absolutely could not cut this stuff. Any experience here?

This sounds like a great job for those pesky Jewish Space Lasers. All kidding aside - I seem to remember cutting an old one with some very sharp tin snips.

tried that. Then brand new razor blades. Nothing.

I have had luck with the shears that the ambulance/first responder folks use.
Also, the high temp finger cots from Grainger https://www.grainger.com/product/3PW...8&emcid=NA:SKU

Brand new utility blade works for me but it’s a tough job.

It was a brand new utility blade and it didn't dent it. I'm going to call Carolina glove and see if they can either make me a few sleeves I can put over the thumb and first finger that just slip on. That's where the glove inevitably fails. The Kevlar does abrade but cutting it is just not doable. Since they already have the fingers cut, it should not be a big deal to sell me few fingers.
I just thought I must be doing something wrong. It gives me a lot more confidence in my chaps when working with the chainsaw.

I’m not at home so I can’t try it- I’m in the states. But did you try on a diamond saw?

Try putting the glove in a vise with the fingers protruding. Then, go at them with a hacksaw. Apparently, the trick is to get lots of tiny teeth working against the "slippery" threads. It's more ripping than slicing. Still not easy, though.

After examining the way the glove is built, which has two pieces of material sewn together to make a finger,I think I'm better off calling the company to see if they make finger covers. The idea of the diamond saw makes me think about the saw jamming.
I have to think that if they can cut the material to make the glove, they should be able to do other things with it as well. Otherwise the listing in Graingers would be where I'd go next.

I have had the best results by using my big Jim Moore shears.

I do some weaving on the side and looking to experiment weaving with kevlar yarn. It is actually more affordable than I thought it would be. Looking to make sort of a cape when working on big stuff. If it goes well I might look at making just raw fabric that folks can use to make other things.

So, we are both weavers then. Dale was a weaver before he discovered money.

What kind of weaving do you do? I have a couple of rigid heddle looms but just made the jump to an 8 shaft table loom. Finally got all the parts a couple of weeks ago. Have the first warps set up but haven't threaded them yet. Down in TN helping with a relative in hospice.

I was taught by a Navaho Family in Lukachukai AZ in the year 1968-69 on a traditional loom outdoors that was an upright. I love tapestry work. At this point I've got three bigger looms from 36 inch up to 48 and varying up to 14 harnesses. Two of those are in storage. I have a wonderful table loom that is eight harness and I was getting all my yarn from McAuslands on PEI Canada at a wonderful $7.00 lb. I've not woven in the last 18 months but want to get back to it. We virtually have hundreds of pounds of single ply wools and some occasional five ply from back in the '70's from William Condon and Sons.

"Stashes at 71" are a sort of strange concept. I have 3/4 of a ton of cryolite too.
Timing is everything.
