free lead glass

A glass retailer near me (SE Ohio) has to get rid of up to 50 tons of Fostoria lead glass products by the end of February because the warehouse has been sold where he has been storing it. He asks that you don't try to resell it as Fostoria Glass. This includes "rock paperweights" that weigh 1 lb each. & each pallet is 1000 lbs.. I melted 100 lbs. in my day tank but it was very cordy so it's not good for blowing. I slumped one to 1350 F like a Warm glass project & it puddled out flat & stayed nice & clear & cord free. I did not try casting it. It's free but you pick up or prepay shipping. There is a loading dock & forklift to get it on a commercial truck or pickup truck. Send me an email if you want his contact info. My email is nickglass12@gmail.com I can send pics to your email address, I can't figure out how to post pics here.
I'll try to answer questions here but may not have the answer. Doing thread pull tests it seems to be in the COE range of 91-93 or so.

Holy jesus. I wish I had 1000' feet of NW waterfront to store that next to. I'd be interested in a ton if I could get a sample to cast.

Jordon, How many pounds do you need to test? I can ship you some by USPS, just reimburse the shipping costs later. PM me your shipping address.

Jordan, on second thought, I'll ship a sample box to you for free so you can test it's viability for casting, then the whole group has a second opinion to go on. ok?
I'm not going to ship samples to others for free.

It may actually blow just fine but was melted too hot, a common occurrence with lead glasses. I have Schott lead glasses that deform at 800F. Any color rod using lead with look awful if melted about about 1800F/

I wish I knew about melting it at a lower temp. My day tank has my old glass again & I can't afford to empty it to try again. The warehouse needs to be emptied by the end of February.

Put a chunk of it in your annealer and take it up carefully around 900F. It may tell you a lot. Just keep pushing up 50F at a time.

Pete, as I said in my first post on this:
I slumped one to 1350 F like a Warm glass project & it puddled out flat & stayed nice & clear & cord free. I did not try casting it.

Is that the same as taking it up to 900 F? BTW, the glass rocks are 1.5 in. thick.

It just helps give you an idea of what kind of temps it would take for you to melt and then blow what potentially could be a very nice crystal. It won't fit any color rods at all. Is it fined out or is it full of seeds.

It fined out overnight. When I charged the "rocks" only 10% blew apart. The rest melted in one piece peacefully.

preheat the rocks. You could have an incredibly nice material you could work with for a long time.

Nick if you want to send me some I will run it though a couple of paces.

I am happy to pay the shipping on slightly larger amount so I can mess with it.

Scot, I can send 14 lbs by USPS for $15. I've sent some to Jordan Kube to test. Send me your address if you want it.

I've shipped 3 sample glass boxes to Scott & Jordan, & another guy. I've asked them to post their observations on this for all to see. It's now 5 weeks or so from when the warehouse is supposed to be emptied so I'm not shipping anymore samples out. Let's see what their verdicts are.
Nick.

If I was not 71, I would take it on, knowing what I know but, I don't have the life left in me to take advantage of this stuff.

It's worth just taking and storing for posterity and then, if you have half a brain, using it.

Nick, I got the package. I was sort of surprised by the rocks. How interesting.

I just need to carve out some time to run it up in the small furnace and I will update my bone head attempts to have some fun with it.

Remember Grandma Prisbee's bottle village. 50K in weight would make a great entry wall around a studio.

That was fast. Did they finally get rid of DeJoy?

Andy Stenerson said he heated up a rock to 1300 F, picked it up for the glory hole & could barely work it. So today I heated up 2 rocks to 925F & picked them up for reheating in my day tank. I had no trouble working them but I'm used to COE 89 cullet. I made a cup & a paperweight....stayed clear & no cords.

I think the terms were "all or none" Perhaps I'm wrong but unless you get it from a secondary source, that's a lot of glass to work with a torch,

Each rock is 1 lb. Each pallet is 1000lbs. You just pay shipping which you set up. If interested, I'll send you the contact info.

Ok so was able to work this stuff picking it up in the "rock form". Which are really clean. It has almost the exact working variables of that Gabbert Cullet that sold a bazillion years back you could get in those hard tack barrels.

It has a small window of workability. Smaller than the original Spectrum nuggets. It goes really soft really quick on the hot end.

I could get used to it and make less detailed stuff that you wanted to lock up quick. We kicked out a really thin glass and it is not happy being left out as long as SP/Bomma at that thickness. It seems to have a thermal shock window on the short side.

Keep in mind this is working from picking up a block and I have found when you do that it is often hard to get the heat right at least for me. I ran the rest up to 950 and drop them in a bucket of water and will melt cullet some time soon in the little 7lbs kiln. Should give me a much better idea.

In all first look at it. Harder to work than the old spectrum but doable. Nice and clear stuff. I bet it would cast nicely because once it hits heat it gets runny quick.

I might pick up a couple pallets and use it for something one I get a handle of what it works like out of the small pot. I am sure I could get in a groove with it if that is what I was working with for a couple weeks.

The owner said all the lead glass has been given away or sold.
