So i spoke to a number of folk at GAS Corning who are convinced that Spectrum will continue production. Nobody gave me any details so now i wonder whether they were optimistic, delusional, or "know something". Any thoughts?

well, the furnaces are shot. Did you see the nuggets that I had with the stones and other inclusions in them from Spectrum? They were the ones Pringle had gotten in late april. When she complained she was told they met the QC standards. I was told that actually the property was being sold off. Those furnaces won't move.

Yes, I did see them and thanks for having them at the conference. Many blowers I spoke to seemed to think that that was acceptable, too

you are in an outdated thread. Spectrum and Spruce Pine both have cullet. The prices have gone up just a smidge.

Try here for Spectrum.

Since your profile says you're in Cleveland, I would guess the closest distributor is Ed Hoy's.

Cristalica from Spruce Pine.

bringing this thread back around...
It seems like Oceanside is producing cullet again.
They are 96 Studio Nuggets. I assume that this is the old system 96 and not the 2.0. Is that the correct assumption?
on another note....
Pete or someone who has more knowledge than me.... I don't understand where/when a cullet like Crystallica melts does the borax leave the already once-melted glass to eat away furnace refractory. It's not like it is in batch form.... I am not a chemist, and don't pretend to be, so a layman's explanation would be welcome.... TIA

Boron gasses off readily, even from cullet and many materials do and can be assessed at micrograms loss per hour. It always goes up with temperature.

My belief about the cullets in particular that we've seen such damage from is that the quick process from batch to barrel leaves the chemical process incomplete and it outgasses once melted the second time. Spectrum was really bad at this. Also, those forumulas are not really stable durable glasses. When you want soft low melt, it's achieved at a cost. Couple that with non AZS refractories and you have your answer.

Is it done off-gassing once it is flat?
From what I have read, it is better to melt at a lower temp than to run it up and down like batch.
