Turning down the Glory hole

What is the recommended way to turn down a Gloryhole? I'm running a little too hot and need to adjust down. Should I just turn the air down?

Turn down both the fuel and air until you reach a neutral flame and the heat you want. Turning down just the air will give you a fuel rich flame.

And if you don't really know what you're doing there, turn the gas down first.
Where are we going and why am I in this basket?
