Taxes and shipping to japan
Ive been asked to participate in an upcoming show in Japan and they have offered to pay wholesale pricing for the work they will display. Does anyone have experience with shipping there and what the tax situation will be. Its been suggested that there will be import tax due from the shipping?

Shouldn't shipping and import duties and taxes be their responsibility if they're paying you wholesale? FOB your studio.

we certainly do not get taxed when we ship crucibles to Japan, Korea or China. Most of our shipping is DHL as the most competitive. VAT or anything else is the responsibility of the receiver. Do make sure your pallets comply with local regulations for the receiver. It needs paperwork that says who manufactured the products.

Ours are usually wire transfers directly to our bank. Occasionally in Thailand it has been mastercard. OZ is one of the two. same with NZ. We prefer the direct transfer and they pay the fees.

They have requested an Escrow service payment through PAYPAL which is how I like to secure payments. The fees are similar to my Square credit card merchant account and they safe guard my money in the case of a dispute. I really dont mind paying the fees and adjust pricing accordingly to account for them. Fees are a deductible business expense. I will look into local DHL. Thanks Pete.
