Have We Reached "Peak Bong?"

Just got back from Hempfest, and wish to report that most all the boro people have added lots of silicone stock to their wares. I don't know what having floppy pipes and bongs says about anyone, but they were flying out of the booths.

This could be the last Hempfest. They had to cut two performance stages this year (no great loss; it's never been a music festival) due to lack of funds, but there seemed to be the same number of vendors and visitors as last year. Many fewer freebies in the swag department, and stuff that used to be given away free is now for sale or winnable (maybe) by spinning a wheel. Some vendors wouldn't even let you spin unless you "liked" them first on Facebook! Say it with me: "lame."

I did, however, win a t-shirt I'll never wear, and a fidget spinner, which I'll probably get bored with in a few hours.

The strobe effect under fluorescents is kind of cool. (Most of the noise is from my ancient camera.) Other than that, there's not a lot you can do with them. There are some fairly artistic variations out there, but none overcome the "OK, now what?" problem.

Did you see any interesting artistic effects in the bong department?

Saw a few boro pieces I thought were outstanding. Some makers are practically hiding their pipes' bowls within intricate designs, almost as if they're ashamed their works are essentially pipes.

Saw nothing intriguing in the offhand bongs, though I did see a guy leaving with one of those ridiculous 4' long twisty standing pipes.

Hempfest is free, and runs until 8 PM tonight if you can get down here.

Yeah I know but they banned dogs from going into the park. I have a friend who is selling there and doing very well with his lampworked pieces.

Honestly, I don't recall those specifically in the overwhelm that is Hempfest's glass vendor population, but I'm not surprised they were selling well. Anything that stands out from the crowd of colorless clear variations will get attention. (I call it overcoming the pipe organ effect; you know they're all different, but they sure do look the same.) I hope he made a profit; some of the more corporate vendors appeared to be selling at (and on some stuff, below) wholesale. Most of the vendors appeared to be doing fairly brisk business, and the ones who were there just to boost awareness of whatever cause or belief they were touting were actually having conversations with festgoers. The only dead spots were the voter registration booths, as always.
