Don't...

So, I ran out of beeswax. I've made some candles before and dropped a little wad of soy wax onto the jacks. Every time I went back to the glory my vessel would ignite from the inside. While a neat trick it also left some nasty residue on the piece. I suppose it also could have been the vanilla scented oil I melted into the wax

I started thinking about a "sounds reasonable but don't try it" thread. Anyone care to share?

I can borrow another one...don't use cat litter to line the bottom of your glory hole.

don't use an aluminum tray for shoving cullet into your furnace. ( Peet Robison and the case of the missing tray, 1988)

Bad move. Really expensive mistake.

Mark your bags for batch. Don't get silica confused with porcelain. ( Al Leedom, my shop, 1984.)

Well that pot is gone...

I was sandblasting near my cullet supply...a little sand won't hurt. It doesn't blend in like you think it would. That glass had a lot of texture.

Ditto on the grinder Pete. I need a bigger shop.

Don't use vegetable oil instead of linseed oil when making a cork mold.

Don't forget to add a hole to said mold to allow expulsion of gases. (Sorry, George...his front tooth paid dearly for that one)

Don't guess that you know which kind of grit a lapping machine is running

Don't add grit to a running lapping machine based on said assumption

Don't try to make the lapping process faster

When using coffee cups like crucibles to melt glass, don't use the ones marked Corning on the bottom. They melts just like glass.

From Ed Schmidt...don't lap glass with stones. Especially if you are in a hurry.

...try to wipe clean the lenses of your prescription glasses with the front of your dampened t shirt after lapping on a grit wheel.

I keep a spare pair of older glasses at the machine to exchange.

Don't ever take work to a selling show which requires orders for a piece you just developed in the last ten days.
