Vacuum Encasement

I'm having trouble finding information on how people are vacuum encasing these days. In the past Schott S8 pucks were the glass of choice - Are people just running through stockpiles of existing stock? Are small runs still being made for private group buys?

Can this technique be performed without S8? Is it possible to produce something similar from batch or will the clarity/flow always be materially inferior?
